Grant Money for Minneapolis Residents

The 2013 Minnesota Legislature appropriated $1 million in Clean Water Fund monies to help property owners who repair/replace their sanitary sewer lines to reduce Inflow and Infiltration (I&I). The Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES) is passing 100 percent of that funding on to cities, which are passing it on to property owners. Cities are administering the grants.

What does this mean for you?

If you are a resident of Minneapolis we have some great news. As of February 2014 the City of Minneapolis has issued a Grant available to residents that require sewer repairs. The Grant will reimburse up to 1/3 of the repair costs up to to a maximum of $2,000. For more information check out this link on how to apply for reimbursement:

Sewer Repairs

How do you know when your sewer line needs repairs? First of all it can happen in any home, duplex or townhome. Often times a homeowner will call a sewer cleaning service because they are experiencing a back up of some level. You may call to have the line snaked/cleaned of blockages that are causing the back up and then find out that the real problem is a break in the line. It is important to remember that a broken sewer line may not always be an obvious break in the line. Pipes can be offset, bellied out, cracked or broken.

It is important when hiring a sewer cleaning service to ask a few preliminary questions.
1. Are you insured and are you a licensed plumber?
2. What is your hourly charge and do you charge a trip fee/travel charge?
3. Is there an additional charge if my line is over 100 feet?

Dusty’s Drain Cleaning is owned by a licensed Master Plumber and we employ service technicians with plumbing backgrounds. Sewer cleaning companies do not need to hold a plumbing license nor are they required to have any plumbing training or certification. As a homeowner it is important to protect yourself by hiring knowledgeable service technicians.

We cannot stress enough the importance of hiring a service that is familiar or more importantly licensed for the services they are providing. Inexperienced or negligible service technicians can cause serious damage to your sanitary sewer pipe. These problems can range from getting their cable stuck in your pipe requiring the excavation of your yard and removal, breaking through an existing pipe that may be weak or worn or worse misdiagnosing a line as broke when it is not.

While 60-75% of main line back-ups are caused by root growth, paper blockages, or other types of blockages such as grease, food etc. There are occasions when your main sewer line can be broken, offset or separated. An indication of a broken or offset pipe is when a sewer cable’s blade comes back shiny. This is often an indicator that the blades at the end of the cable have come into contact with dirt and rocks. However, the only accurate/definite way to diagnose where and how your line is broke is by having it video inspected.

Dusty’s Drain Cleaning works hard to be a one-stop shop. We make sure that all of our service vehicles are equipped with the necessary tools to snake, video inspect and diagnose where your line runs. Every vehicle has cables for main lines, smaller drains, video cameras and line locators. Thus allowing us to clear the blockage in your line and video inspect the integrity of your line to determine the condition and if any spots are bad we are able to tell you exactly where and how deep.

If after having your line video inspected it is determined that it needs to be repaired it is important to have an estimate. We do several repairs each month and will come to your home to video and locate the problem area or areas and provide you with a free estimate.
